I had planned on getting this to you on Friday September 19th, however Isabel had something to say about that. The university has been closed for two days, and without power for about 24 hours. As some of you are aware we have also had server problems, but it appears as of Saturday morning we are up and running again. In light of the SAES meeting in Dearborn this coming week we are sorry if this has caused any problems or inconveniences.
On another note, some of you may be asking about the RFA for the NRI that has yet to appear in the Federal Register. I have just learned that the RFA is being re-written at CSREES to accommodate both the NRI and the Integrated Accounts into a single RFA. CSREES expects to have a unified RFA on the street sometime in early October, with deadlines for the various competitions due in November and December. Most of you have come to expect the RFA in September, and I can only advise you to continue to encourage your faculty to proceed with preparation of proposals in anticipation of the announcement from CSREES soon. I have been told that we may learn more regarding the dates for proposal submissions at the ESS/SAES meetings in Dearborn next week. As soon as I learn anything more I will keep you posted.
Just a short note to let all of you know that Dr. Keith Cooper formerly Director of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment station has stepped up to a new role effective immediately as Acting Executive Dean of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Acting Executive Director of NJAES, and Acting Dean of Cook College, replacing Dr. Ade

laja who has accepted an endowed faculty position at Michigan State University. NERA extends best wishes to Keith in his new role.
Also new to the administrative ranks, we welcome Dr. Bruce Gardner who is serving this academic year as Interim Dean and Director for AES and CES at the University of Maryland, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Scott Angle has also stepped up to a new role as Interim Executive Dean for the Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension programs. Congratulations to both.
Publications and Meetings of Interest:
If you have not seen this publication, I would draw your attention to the U. S. Department of Agriculture report issued earlier this summer, "21st Century Agriculture: A Critical Role for Science and Technology." The report features conventional and emerging technologies that can increase agricultural productivity, enhance the nutrient content of foods, and offer new capabilities and options in production and marketing for developing nations. The report also highlights unmet needs in sub-Saharan Africa and other developing regions and addresses issues of technology development and transfer. APDF of the report is available at: http://www.usda.gov/news/pdf/agst21century.pdf
