This past week I participated in the fall meeting of the National Multi-State Coordinating Committee with the other Regional Executive Directors and a number of issues came forward that I would like to bring to your attention.
NRI
As I related earlier, the NRI - Request for Applications is expected to be published later this month, and will announce plans for consolidated research and integrated research, education and extension opportunities for FY 04. Deadlines for applications for the various competitions are expected to begin in December 2003 and extend through June 2004.
The NRI RFA will include continuing and new research and integrated problems, as well as some modifications to programs offered in past years. Applicants may submit proposals under the NRI Research Grants authority as will as the modified authority of the Initiative. The new RFA will reflect the broadened scope of the NRI, as will as USDA's commitment to sustaining support for fundamental science in support of Agriculture.

the Hyatt Regency Newport, April 18-22, 2004. I would encourage you, if you have not already done so, to encourage you to send your office budget director. This meeting is invaluable, and as we learned in Dearborn two weeks ago, it will be the college/station budget directors who will be directly involved with federal compliance and regulatory issues Some directors may find if valuable to attend.

NAREEE Advisory Board Meeting - October 27-29, 2003.
The Secretary of Agricultures National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education and Economics Advisory Board will meet later this month and will focus on "Food and Nutrition in Obesity Prevention: Implications for Research and Education". If there are issues that you would like to see place on the agenda or discussed, please share them with me so that I can find a way to bring them to the attention of the Advisory Board.
